Schlage’s Encode smart deadbolt is a strong smart lock that connects to your Wi-Fi network and is compatible with Key service by Amazon. That’s the service that allows Amazon delivery people to place packages inside your door, instead of leaving them on the porch. Hence, your packages are safe even when you are not at home. It also works with Key by Amazon-compatible security cameras that allow you to watch and record such deliveries. Modern technology really saves a lot of worries. Additionally, if you pair the lock with a Ring Video Doorbell, so you can see who’s at your front door and open it remotely to your liking.
Those are some great features attached to it, but once a user, you quickly discover that the Schlage Encode is not immune to an important weakness in Amazon’s approach to the smart home. Re-installing the Ring Alarm system, however, doesn’t allow you to evaluate one of the first products in Ring’s smart lighting series, the Ring Pathlight. Since the Encode works with Ring Video Doorbells and cameras, the basic assumption would be it also works with the Ring Alarm.
Sorry! But The Schlage Encode, as earlier mentioned, connects to your Wi-Fi network directly, so there is no bridge required, like in other devices. Also, Ring Alarms only work with Z-Wave deadbolts, such as Schlage’s own Schlage Connect. If you only have a Ring Video Doorbell or a simple camera installed, a small icon will appear at the bottom right-hand side of the doorbell or camera video window. Using that icon, you can lock and unlock the Encode deadbolt while watching a live a Wimbledon match or making your favorite alfredo fettucine pasta.
MULTIPLE DESIGN CHOICES and STRONG DURABLE HARDWARE
Like the earlier Schlage Connect deadbolt models, Encode is available in a range of polishes and looks. The model being mentioned in this article is the more traditional Camelot trim, available in finishes of Satin Nickel and Aged Bronze. A more streamlined, rectangular Century trim offers a way simpler, more up-to-date visual appeal and comes in Satin Nickel and Matte Black. You’ll obviously have your preference, but don’t worry! No matter what it is, both the models outdo each other.
As you’d expect from Schlage, the hardware is well-built and tough, whilst remaining graceful to the observer. The satin nickel model looks remarkably stylish, but has a little bulkiness of size in its structure. The backside of the deadbolt, covered in a mix of the same metal finish with a non-complementing black plastic battery cover is far less attractive. It’s diameter is greater in size than some of your other smart locks, and that plastic cover, which dominates the built design, is unexpectedly frailer than you would expect. Finishing and polishing in dark shades improves the quality of presentation but, like most smart locks, you might not be able to ignore the lock hanging on the rear of your front door.
Configuring the lock for continuing use is a tad bit annoying because you’ll need to go through at least two setup processes. To use it with a third party device/application such as Key by Amazon, Alexa, or a Ring Video Doorbell (or other Ring camera), you’ll install the Key by Amazon software first, and then install the Schlage Home app to access the rest of the lock’s features, access to which are usually preferred by users. You’ll also need to install the Schlage Home app if you want to use the lock with Google Assistant, you can configure this out to work with Key by Amazon, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Schlage Home to your liking. It’s also important to mention that Encode is not compatible with Apple HomeKit.
Schlage Encode linked in Key by Amazon
The Key by Amazon app provides a simplified set of customized user-friendly controls for the Schlage Encode smart lock.
The lock comes equipped from the factory with one six-digit primary master code and two four-digit secondary user codes. These are printed on a label that you can see when you remove the battery cover. Once you’ve created a new personalized master code with either the Key by Amazon or Schlage Home app. These codes, however, are deleted and they can only be restored by factory-resetting the smart lock.
When you configure the settings on your lock with Key by Amazon on your smartphone, Amazon’s app accesses your contact database during setup to ask for the address where the lock will be installed, listing the addresses that qualify for in-home delivery first.
The Key by Amazon app lets you create a single master code that extends admin privileges within the app, making you sole controller of lock settings. The number of digits you use to create this master code will be the number of digits that will be required to grant future users the ability to unlock the lock. If your master code consists of six digits, for example, all guest codes must also be six digits long; this lock has the ability to support up to a 100 codes.
Apart from the master PIN, anyone else you generate a code for in Amazon’s app will be considered a guest. The app will automatically generate a PIN of the required length for each guest, which you can edit to your liking later on, or delete and simply create your own custom one. Guests don’t have any privileges within the app so you don’t have to worry about a friend you only wanted to let in once infringing on your privacy. These codes can also be deleted where the master PIN cannot so as to grant you the ultimate authority. You can add guests from your smartphone’s contact database by allowing Amazon permission to access them or you can simply do so manually. An example of such a feat would be to generate a code for your teenager who doesn’t have a phone or any elderly at the house whoa aren’t much comfortable with technology.
In summary, this lock has more merits than demerits so you can consider it as a possible candidate while choosing a smart lock for your home. To brief it down, here they are listed in bullets for you:
